Are you a plant mom? Do you have thousands of succulents, thriving ivy & happy flowers dancing around your garden & inside your home? If you answered yes:
Please immediately contact us and teach us your ways.
Let us transport you to an even further state of botanical bliss by introducing you to this green goddess artist, Angela E. Smyth.
Based in Calgary, Angela has turned her passion for plants into a tangible reality through utilization of gouache materials. Seeing Angela’s work reminds us of the pure & simple beauty found in nature. We are particularly smitten with her cacti work. The juxtaposition of the pink & yellow flowers against the green, prickly base have us convinced these may be our favorite type of plant! You know, because they are pretty, yet sassy.
Angela, hope it’s ok, but we are deeming you the unofficial artist for all existing & aspiring plant moms. <3 Thank you for being a part of the Girl Disco family! We can’t wait to see what you will create next!
…Now let’s get to the feature!
What is your craft?
I am a plant obsessed illustrator and printmaker, turning that obsession into botanical based illustrations. All of my work is hand painted with gouache. I create lots of original paintings, personal commissions and prints for my online shop! For the future I hope to work on hand printing patterns and designs onto fabric. I also take joy in designing enamel pins, which I sell alongside my other work.
What inspires you?
Oh, so many things! I have many hard working people and creators in my life that keep me motivated! Being surrounded by people who love what they do, gets me inspired to continue to grow in my own practice. Since my work is so heavily plant influenced, even just a walk through a plant shop or park always leaves me eager to create something! I also have loads of house plants to keep me animated.
What gives you a boost of confidence?
My 3 M’s: Music, Makeup, and Making. When I’m working on a piece, looking fierce with great tunes playing, I feel unstoppable. I find I work so much better when good music is playing, and I can even see the results when I paint. It’s as if the plants I’m painting are dancing with me!
Who is your favorite 70s female icon and why?
Our space princess, Carrie Fisher. She was a huge feminist icon, and was never afraid to speak her mind about the double-standard she faced as a woman in her field. Through all of it, she remained this strong and resilient person, and I admire her so much for that. She also coined the phrase “Sur-thrive”, and tell me that isn’t the best way to live! When she passed away I know the world could feel that loss.
What does Girl Disco mean to you?
Girl Disco to me is about being unapologetically you, and celebrating it. It’s a way of life; being so positive and loving that you shine and give others that light!
Where can people find your work?
My website has my shop on it so you can buy most of the things I create. I update my Instagram regularly as well as give you a peak into my process and life! I also appear at local markets around my city of Calgary, Canada! Info about where and when they are happening is also regularly updated on my website and Instagram.
Thank you for being a part of HighlightHER, Angela!
