CAROLINE ~FRICKEN~ CHESSIA PEOPLE!!! If you aren’t familiar with Caroline or her work, we will gladly take the job to inform you. Based in Sevilla, Spain, Caroline takes inspiration from the beauty in the every day, strong women & groovy 70s patterns. Caroline primarily uses gouache and watercolors in her work which give them a beautiful, rustic and whimsical texture we simply adore.
We could honestly stare at one of Caroline’s pieces all day… The colors are so captivating and we tend to discover something new each time we revisit it! Her work is incredibly detailed and every piece is done with intention. In fact, one of our favorite details found in Caroline’s work is her use of flowers! We particularly love when they appear in the hair of women. It is a true fantasy of ours to have beautiful blooming flowers in our luscious locks 24/7. Flowers in the hair or not, they add a transformative element to her illustrations making you believe in the power of the flower! ~insert peace sign~
We were utterly blown away when Caroline told us she made a special design just for her feature! Can you guess which one it is? We will give you a hint: there are three women who we interpret to be Stevie Nicks, Donna Summer and Cher. The ultimate trio of 70s babes! We will be featuring a few limited edition prints of it in the Girl Disco shop when she opens so keep your eyes out! We know it will go fast!
Caroline, thank you so much for sharing your disco spirit with us through your work! You are so, so talented and we can’t wait to see what you dream up next <3333
On to the feature!
What is your craft?
I create paintings using watercolor and gouache!
What inspires you?
I love pictures of beautiful places, especially Marrakech. Self-assured women who have something to say to the world will always inspire me. Prints and patterns of the 70s & modern day.
What gives you a boost of confidence?
Okay, I love buying ridiculous second hand clothes and wearing them out. Dancing to 70s tunes. Wearing red lipstick which is essentially confidence in a 10$ stick. And obviously when people like my art that gives me a massive boost of confidence!
Who is your favorite 70s female icon and why?
Stevie nicks is the quintessential 70s icon, I don’t know that much about her personal life, but her songs are incredible and I love putting on my shawl and dancing to them. Also, random but I love Princess Margaret, she’s not a typical 70s icon but I love how she dressed and how she was a rebellious royal who rolled with this glitzy famous crowd.
What does Girl Disco mean to you?
I think Girl Disco is about accepting your inner disco queen and letting her out. I think it means that the community of girls & women of the world should work together and help build each other up. To me, Girl Disco is a collective of empowered women who feel free enough to express themselves as they see fit, reject the notion of settling—for a relationship, job, or person, and who help other woman do these same things.
Where can people find your work?
I am on Instagram & Pinterest as chessiart and hoping to open up either an Etsy or society6 shop under the same name in the near future.
Anything Else You Want People to Know?
I’m always open for collabs especially with feminist & environmental groups!
Thank you for being a part of HighlightHER, Caroline!
