Today is a SUPER special day for us because we get to highlight a long-time and very, very dear friend of ours, Samantha Ida! We have been blown away by Samantha’s artistic abilities since day one. And let us emphasize the word “abilities”. From drawing, painting, embroidery & beyond, Samantha seems to be able to do it ALL. No craft is too big for her to tackle and that’s one of the things we love most about her!
Based in Milwaukee, WI, Samantha has been tapping into her embroidery skills as her latest creative outlet. What makes Samantha’s work especially unique is her ability to give fabrics and materials a second life. Not only is this a fun and challenging way to create, but it is also extremely economical (AND WE LOVE THE EARTH!). As you will read below, the only items purchased for her pieces were the hoops. A true queen.
And if you haven’t already peeked ahead, we are so overjoyed & blown away to announce Samantha created not one, not two, but FOUR unique embroidered Girl Disco inspired designs for her feature! If you ever wondered what Girl Disco would look like in embroidery form, look no further. We are seriously so speechless Samantha made these (which will eventually be for sale in the Girl Disco shop!). Any embroidery design without sequins simply will not do - we have been changed for good!
Samantha, thank you so much for sharing your talent with the world! Everything you create has so much love and we can feel it. YOU ARE GIRL DISCO <333
On to the feature!
What is your craft?
Lately embroidery has been my craft. It’s a great way to use found objects and incorporate lots of color and texture which I love! But I also draw, print, and paint! I try to work when inspiration hits so that often means using whatever is around.
What inspires you?
I grew up in a household that loves thrifting, vintage and re-purposing things from the trash so you can see hints of all those things in what I make! The only materials I bought for these embroideries were the hoops! The rest were scavenged from the trash and my Mom's basement I'm also lucky to have an amazing husband and set of friends who push me to keep making something! Anything! <3
What gives you a boost of confidence?
Lately, I've been loving a pair of hoop earrings and some lipstick :)
Who is your favorite 70s female icon and why?
Carrie Fisher! I have two brothers and watched a lot of Star Wars so she was obviously my favorite character (ok besides the ewoks...) She knew how to kick some ass, make a sassy comment and wear that hair.
What does Girl Disco mean to you?
Girl Disco means realism, fierceness, girl power, electric, and inspiring shiny-bright- colorful confidence to all!
Where can people find your work?

Thank you for being a part of HighlightHER, Samantha!
